World’s Tallest Thermometer

The heat is on!

Why, yes, it does say 108 degrees because it was indeed 108 degrees when this picture was taken

Willis Herron commissioned the Young Electric Sign Company to build the thermometer, which was finished in 1991. It stands 134 feet tall, in honor of the record breaking 134 degree temperature reached in the area on July 10, 1913. Its core is reinforced by concrete so the high winds in the area will not snap it in half again (yes, again, because this apparently happened shortly after its initial construction). This newest version of the thermometer has been dubbed “The Big Fix.”

Next to the thermometer is a gift shop, for those wanting to always remember this World’s Largest.
